Summary
This attorney position is within the Intellectual Property function of the Legal Affairs group and will support the intellectual property needs of a growth-phase biotechnology company. The attorney will design and implement patent strategies to protect conjugated and unconjugated antibody drug products and related platform technologies. The attorney will also assess the IP landscape for emerging technologies and advise business and research team members on IP risks and related issues.
The successful candidate enjoys being part of a high functioning team and providing solutions in an entrepreneurial environment, with the goal of improving the lives of people with cancer.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Drafting and prosecuting patent applications related to large molecule drug products, including post-grant proceedings as needed
- Designing and implementing effective strategies for optimizing patent and regulatory exclusivity for drug products
- Initiating and maintaining partnerships with researchers to identify patentable subject matter and implement patent protection strategies
- Conducting IP landscape searches and formulating risk assessments for patentability and freedom to operate
- Communicating balanced and accurate IP risk assessments to research and business colleagues
- Providing IP support for business transactions, as needed
- Providing support for third party IP issues, as needed
- Managing relationships with outside counsel and collaborators
Qualifications:
- 5-8 years experience as a patent attorney in a pharma or biotech therapeutics corporate setting and/or as a law firm associate representing biotechnology clients
- Ability to draft biotechnology patent applications with minimal supervision
- Substantial experience in US and foreign patent drafting, filing, and prosecution in biotechnology
Substantial experience with patentability and FTO searches and analysis
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Excellent English written and oral communication skills
- Large IP law firm training and/or in-house experience preferred
- Experience with small molecule technology a plus
Education
- US law degree (JD) is required
- Admission to practice before the US Patent and Trademark Office,
- Membership in a state bar, and eligibility to be admitted to practice in the state of Washington are required
- An advanced degree in biological science is required; PhD preferred
